Advertising has improved.
I’ve always been the type of person that is affected by advertisements. Positively and negatively. For instance, when a Gap commercial pisses me off, I don’t shop at Gap. But when a Taco Bell commercial makes me laugh, I eat Taco Bell. I’m easy, I know. I can’t help it. I’m sitting here signing about $5 foot longs, desiring the superior drinkability of bud light, but not wanting to gamble with my beer taste by defying the More Taste League. I realize that I’m a hopeless consumer and a superficial conundrum, but, I’m ok with that.
I’m not always swayed by commercials though. Another example, Coors Light commercials have never once made me want to drink a Coors Lights. They are funny, sometimes, but not really. I don’t hate them; I just don’t like them. On the other hand, Taco Bell’s new Fully Loaded Nachos have earned a place in my heart. Each chip is covered in something delicious and colorful. So pleasing to the eyes and the mouth. And the commercial just has really big pictures of it, effectively making me hungry even though I just had a Triple Steak Burrito. Bless you, Taco Bell. You’ve been a hero of mine since childhood, and you always come through.
Commercials lately have certainly improved. Their targeted advertising seems to be hitting more bull’s-eyes. Avoiding the booby traps in my brain and skipping over my common sense, it’s like they’re aiming straight for my heart. I’m just minding my own business, watching the game, when the team calls a timeout and I’m bombarded with commercials for a minute. Taken away from my 3rd and inches, I’m now watching beautiful people talk about material goods and possessions. It’s like they know I’m somewhere on a couch drinking a beer and wondering what I need to buy next. Wait, did I say “need?” You see, what I meant was… crap. I’ve been had.
But, what’s with the diamond commercials during football? Do they honestly think we (men) care about other people (women) while watching football? We’re not thinking about buying diamonds, we’re wondering why Taco Bell doesn’t deliver, and why they don’t serve beer. “Diamonds are forever” … give me a break, this commercial is forever. Stop painting a correlation between diamonds and love. Save your diamond ads for the Cheesecake Factory menu. We don’t want them mixed in with sports, beer, and food.
Honestly, who would buy a diamond necklace directly from a commercial? People would see it and say, “that’s the exact same as the commercial!” Doesn’t that in fact take away from the beauty of it? It’s not unique, it’s from a commercial!
